Which lock type should you get?
By igloohome | 2 September 2022
With the array of smart locks choices in the market, it can be hard to decide on one. We explore the differences between a retrofit, mortise, and deadbolt in this article, so you can make an informed choice!
Before we begin, it's always good to check your door compatibility to decipher what you can actually use.
What do the locks look like?
Retrofit, Mortise, and Deadbolt respectively
As depicted above, the Retrofit fits over existing hardware while the Mortise and Deadbolt replace your lock cylinder.
What's the difference?
There are a bunch of differences between each model that you should take note of, and this greatly relies on the type of lockset you have. Check your door compatibility.
a) Installation
The Retrofit is also installed on the inside of the door, so the door's exterior remains untouched.
Inside of the home
The Mortise and Deadbolt will alter the front of your door as drilling is involved. The difference here is that the Mortise replaces the full lockset, while the Deadbolt replaces only the lock cylinder. The deadbolt will require a separate handle to open and close the door.

b) Modes of access
The Retrofit unlocks via Bluetooth keys. If you want PIN code access, the Keypad is available as an accessory.
The Mortise range accepts PIN codes, Bluetooth keys, RFID tags, and fingerprints. The Deadbolt accepts PIN codes and Bluetooth keys only.
c) Backup keys
In case of unforeseen circumstances, you can override the locks with a backup key.
With the Retrofit Lock, you keep your existing keys since nothing is altered on the front of your door. The Mortise and Deadbolt come with a new set of keys for your safekeeping.
Which lock do I pick?
Again, it boils down to your door's compatibility.
If you're renting or don't want to modify your door with drilling, then the Retrofit Lock would be ideal.
If you want fingerprint access, then the Mortise 2+ and Push-Pull Mortise would best fit your lifestyle needs.
If you're looking for a basic smart lock that's not too pricey, the Deadbolt would be a great start.
